Well what a week it has been. Adjusting to living with this new little person has been incredible. It has been everything that everyone has said it would be and nothing like anything anyone has said it would be. The nights have been interesting to say the least, however Callum has been getting better and better at settling in the evenings and is now managing to stay asleep for around 3-5 hours at a time. Mum and Dad have been having a great time dressing him up in all the cute gear that we have received from all you wonderful people... thanks so much. Mum and Dad are doing their best to tag team sleep - and the way we look when being woken I reckon could scare some of those professional wrestlers quiet easliy. One happy and sad moment for the week has been Nana Lyn's presence (and presents) here for the week. The sad part was her leaving yesterday to head back to NZ. Thanks so much Nana Lyn, we have cherished your time with us and it has been great for little Callum to get to know you a little in his first days out of the cooker. We still are captivated by Callum's little facial movements (usually related to wind) and gurgles and have been snapping shots like we are a tourist party in our own home. Callum was pretty cut about the rugby the other night - as he has had the official ok to support the All Blacks from Danielle - and there are some shots of him in his supporters gear that should make it to the site shortly. Danielle's road to recovery has been simply awesome however quite expected for such and extraordinary woman. The Dr she saw actually made the comment that he thought she had the uterus of a post 10 week birth period as opposed to the one week that she had had. |

Wed 31/7/02 | Well, this poor little fella has some adjusting to do. The lovely Tues evening became a bit challening overnight as Callum decided he wasn't overly happy with his new little spot, and his new bed. Mummy and Daddy managed to keep him fairly quiet however with Nana Lyn's help and some walking (and feeding of Champagne to Dad as he worked on Callum - this guy can produce some wind!). A wet nappy and a screaming frenzy later, Mum and Dad tried many tricks and eventually after whispering into his little ears he figured that things weren't that bad and he would have a sleep - so long as this lovely warm Daddy kept holding onto him. So Daddy went downstairs and gave Mummy some valuable sleep time and Daddy fell asleep on the couch with him as he tried to watch a Monty Python vid. Danielle 'tagged in' at about 3:30am waking Callum - and Daddy - for feeding and further cuddles as Daddy (none of which he actually remembers) made his way upstairs to bed. Today we had the mid wife visit and check Callum out. He seems very healthy and very brave as even a prick on the foot to get some blood didn't phase him too much. He was engaged in the healthy snack of Dad's finger at the time though. Mum is doing very well and the road to recovery continues. |

Tue 30/7/02 "Wall day" | Wow, what a night - Mon night/Tues morn. This day aptly named 'wall day' as both Mum and Dad went smashing into this wall at a rapid rate of knots. This little boy is now just trying to show off (well his tonsils anyway). Not much sleep to be had, for anyone on the ward, as the little fella is coping with his Mum's feeding changes, and a whole lot of wind... DANG!!! Well after a long night and some hard work Tuesday day arrived and we began plans to get home. We got all packed, got some closing photos and away we whisked, after some initial challenges with the car seat - I tell you, it must have been designed by that guy called Rubik's. Getting home was just marvellous and we relaxed and revelled in the bliss of home life again. The little boy again grew cuter by the hour as we sought to return to as much normality as you can achieve with a 4 day old Bubba. A lovely evening was had with the Nana's and Poppy around - and Uncle Chris. The obligatory joyful toasts were made and a lovely night ensued. You should have seen how much Champagne little Callum drank!!!... Heh, heh, heh. |

Mon 29/7/02 | Yahoo... one sleep to go before we head home. Looking forward to that. Whilst having all the midwives around has been fantastic, having learnt so much (and kept Callum from going insane) we are ready to be getting home now. Is it possible that this little man has actually got cuter today? It seems to happen by the day, just when you think it isn't possible. A fairly relaxed day today, nothing too major to report. Just trying to get sleeps amidst the feeding frenzy that Callum has now found himself in. Unfortunately he is doing a lot of work on the feeding front and is creating a lot of wind so not only is the name of 'Coma' dropped but he now has a knew name of 'Pavarotti'. He has been getting those lungs going and making up for lost time today, feeding and screaming - which is actually a relief. Please keep Danielle in your thoughts though as this little fella is starting to take his toll. |

Sun 28/7/02 | Wow, a whopping 4 hours of sleep for Mummy overnight (yes it is a lot - those who have had children are smiling and nodding) an hour or so for Daddy. Fr Tom visited in the morning and gave communion to Mum and Dad and a blessing to little Callam, he was most impressed with the little (big) boy. Big day today working to get 'Coma' awake and feeding. Had to get some formula into him as he hadn't fed much at all so far, getting concerned about his attempts to get into Jenny Craig's record books as youngest ever dieter. He took some of this formula and promptly went back into his Coma. Daddy managed three more hours sleep, Mummy another hour or so. Then finally after a walk and making a whole lot of noise, this fella started screaming, and there was only one direction he was heading (that's enough information). FYI - Name of 'Coma' has now officially been dropped. Also today, Daddy gave Callum his first bath, what an experience... First films close to being developed, stay tuned for those pics of this little treasure. |

Sat 27/7/02 | Hmmmm, need to try getting some of that sleep stuff at some stage... oh well there's plenty of time for that. This baby is just a treasure, he's just gorgeous - he takes after his Dad! (heh, the advantage of being web site editor)... in Daniel's defense though, Danielle does agree - amazing what child birth will do to the mind. Long day today of working to get this little one to feed. Danielle again does amazingly well, so patient and loving. Managed to get a good feed in in the evening when the guru midwife sorted little Callum out - I swear he would jump through hoops for her. New name possibly for this little bubba - Coma. He is still just an exhausted little fella from the birth. Various sleeps had for Mum and Dad for a total of about 2-3 hours each. |

Fri 26/7/02 | Happy Birthday little Callum - Contractions continue to be felt in the morning and Danielle is moved up to delivery suite - a sure sign things are progressing. In the morning they break the waters in order to move things along... Well it worked... @#$!#$.... Owwwch owwwch.... Daniel you !#$!$#$! The pain gets unbearable very quickly, epidural is asked for and administered within about 45 minutes. Anaesthetist is friend for life... Danielle loves Daniel again. This slows the labour somewhat however progess continues through the evening. Pushing begins about 9:00pm and continues for a whopping 2 hours. Danielle, obviously exhausted, says enough is enough, more epidural administered - as she hadn't had too much of it leading up to the pushing to help gain some sensation... Danielle angry with Daniel again - and fair enough too! Assisted (medi-vac) birth occurs, and whilst first impressions indicated that Danielle had given birth to a toddler who decided to skip infancy, it was confirmed that Callum Richard John Burns had been born at 9 AND A 1/2 POUNDS!!! at 11:03pm Friday 26/7/02. Danielle Goss you are a legend!!! Mummy is doing well, whilst fairly sore. |

Thu 25/7/02 | Many contractions felt throught the day. Morning examinations reveal things have started, with a small amount of dilation. Continued walks throughout the day (Danielle tried to enter a home exhibition near the hospital! - heh, picture that, "Hi there, yes this is a lovely hous... whoosh... oopsie, sorry, bye"). Smaller contractions beginning to be felt fairly consistently. Continued into night, until about 11pm. Daniel stayed o'night at hospital. Daniel gets about 6 hrs sleep. Danielle gets about 3. |
|
Wed 24/7/02 | 7:00PM... Off to the Hospital to set things in motion. Prostin Gel administered to assist the process. Danielle to stay overnight. Daniel (not willingly) must return home |
